An @c01old man@c0e passing through the small village of
@c02Lastend@c0e (in a universe somewhat similar to this one)
stopped at the local (and only) tavern in town, The Greased
Beast, to rest and enjoy a mild intoxicant before continuing
his journey. The @c02old man@c0e appeared unremarkable although a
bit travel worn, but strangers being rare in @c02Lastend@c0e, a
small crowd had gathered in the GB to hear any news the
traveller might care to relate.
@p
The @c03old man@c0e (who, as it happens, was a very powerful
(and eccentric) demigod traveling incognito) soon became
bored and irritated by the trivial gossip the villagers were
interested in discussing.
@p
The @c09old man@c0e, who even though he was a demigod, had
sore feet and a slight buzz, decided to teach the people of
@c02Lastend@c0e a Lesson. @c0d"Since you attach such importance to
such little things,"@c0e he said, suddenly looking not at all
unremarkable, @c0d"little things will now determine the very
course of your lives"@c0e. With that, the @c05old man@c0e picked up
his pack (and an intoxicant for the road) and walked
through a stunned crowd to the door.
@p
As he was about to leave, he felt a twinge of
compassion for the decent, if somewhat petty, people of
the village. @c0d"If anyone has courage enough to fight, they
will be helped"@c0e, the @c09old man@c0e muttered over his shoulder
as he left the villagers to wonder just what the hell he was
talking about.
@p
What the @c0aold man@c0e had been talking about soon became
horrifyingly evident. The villagers awoke the next morning
to find a giant anthill (inhabited by, you guessed it,
giant ants) at the edge of the village. The ants
made continuous forays about the village in search of food,
which was primarily the villagers and their livestock.
But there was one slim ray of hope!
@p
In a (brief) moment of compassion for the people of @c02Lastend@c0e,
the @c0bo@c0dl@c0ed @c0fm@c09a@c0an@c0e
@c03(a potent demigod, remember)@c0e
had placed a cache of magical items on most levels of
the Anthill. They were well guarded, to be sure, but
absolutely necessary if the Brood Queen and the rooms full of
her eggs were to be destroyed. You have just volunteered!
